Unscheduled maintenance

Due to unscheduled maintenance on our servers, access to some folders of the PowerFolder cloud may be temporarily limited. We apologize for any inconvenience. From Tuesday morning at 9:00 clock the affected node should then be available again.

Today possibly short-term restrictions on accessibility

Because of the migration of the PowerFolder Cloud to new, more powerful server at the data center operator Hetzner Online from Nuremberg a little fine tuning is necessary. So today it can once again occasionally come to short-term restrictions on the accessibility of the cloud. We apologize for any inconvenience.

PowerFolder: Moving to new servers and extension to IPv6

Currently, the PowerFolder cloud is migrating to new, larger and more powerful servers. Therefore, there may be short-term restrictions on service until May 27th. In addition, the PowerFolder cloud is now accessible via IPv6.

Due to the strong increase in user numbers in recent years, Düsseldorf-based dal33t GmbH, developer of the File Sync & Share solution PowerFolder, has now begun with the move of the PowerFolder cloud to new, larger server at data center operator Hetzner Online from Nuremberg. With the near doubling of storage capacity and the faster processors of the new servers, the PowerFolder cloud is well prepared for the future. As a result of the move – which will be completed by May 25 – there may be short-term cloud accessibility issues; but these will only take a few minutes each.

PowerFolder cloud now available via IPv6

For a long time, the basis for any data exchange and communication on the Internet was the Internet Protocol “IPv4”. In purely mathematical terms, this means that four billion Internet addresses can be allocated – which seemed to be sufficient just over 30 years ago, when this standard was developed. In the meantime, however, the pool of addresses has been completely used up, mainly due to the sharp rise in global user numbers and the proliferation of mobile devices. The last IPv4 addresses were already issued in 2015 in North America.

Remedy is to create the IPv6 standard, which can provide several hundred sextillion addresses. However, as not every hardware is able to communicate via IPv6, the conversion is done gradually; For example, most access providers (such as Vodafone, Telekom or Unitymedia) also offer parallel operation of IPv4 and IPv6 (“dual stack”).

Among those already equipped for the new standard is also PowerFolder: The cloud is now accessible via both IPv4 and IPv6.

Birmingham extends ahead with PowerFolder

Although the University of Birmingham (UoB) contract for the File Sync & Share solution PowerFolder of Düsseldorfer dal33t GmbH expires at the end of 2018, the British university decided to extend it early.

Düsseldorf/Birmingham 11.05.2018 – One cannot express their satisfaction with a product better: The University of Birmingham has already extended the contract with dal33t GmbH for the use of PowerFolder, which was previously due to expire at the end of the year 2018, well before the end of its term. Aslam Ghumra of the University’s Research Data Management said, “The developers at PowerFolder have listened to us and helped us with our concerns and ideas, even after our commissioning of PowerFolder at our high-performance data centre.” Christian Sprajc, CEO of dal33t GmbH, the company behind PowerFolder, added, “In the University of Birmingham, I am pleased to have such a long-established university as a customer and I am delighted that we will continue our productive and innovative cooperation well into the future.”

In the summer of 2016, PowerFolder was chosen because it guarantees a tailor-made, competitive solution that integrated easily with the university’s own system. The secure and uncomplicated, flexible collaboration of researchers within the university and with their national and international colleagues is of immense importance for the research-intensive university. In addition, UOB also maintains scientific collaborative partnerships with major commercial companies to help them develop high-tech products, as well as collaborating with state health authorities.

In the coming years, PowerFolder will continue to ensure that the sharing of the University’s highly sensitive data will continue to function smoothly and securely.

About the University of Birmingham

For example, Francis William Ashton (Chemistry, 1922), John Robert Vane (Medicine, 1982), Paul Nurse (Medicine, 2001), Mike Kosterlitz and David Thouless (Physics, 2016) oder Sir J. Fraser Stoddart (Chemistry, 2016).

Space.Cloud.Unit: PowerFolder is revolutionizing the cloud market with Blockchain!

Space.Cloud.Unit (SCU) is the next evolution in the cloud space market. With the world’s first cloud building kit, users can assemble their cloud according to their own wishes and needs. The blockchain project is being developed by File Sync & Share specialist dal33t, developers of the tried-and-tested PowerFolder solution.

Dusseldorf. April 19, 2018 – Anyone who currently uses storage space in the cloud almost always has to make compromises. Sometimes a part of the memory space remains unused, the contract is too long or there are services included that are not needed, but still have to be paid for – simply because they belong to the package. “You just can’t please everyone”, say the providers. Oh, really?

Yes, you can! With “Space.Cloud.Unit” (SCU) users can soon build their ideal, individually tailored cloud service, without having to sign up to inflexible bundled deals and to bind to a provider in the long term. Space.Cloud.Unit allows users to only pay for what they really need in terms of storage space, contract length, services and security standards – and not a single penny more. SCU will then make a first major step towards decentralisation of the previously rigid cloud market.

Blockchain makes it possible

At the heart of SCU is a marketplace that brings together cloud space providers and cloud space seekers. There, users can specify their requests for memory size, storage location / location of servers, time period and availability (maximum downtime). In turn, providers themselves submit appropriate offers there.

Enquiries and offers are then fully automatically matched and merged. Subsequently, a digital purchase and service contract (a “smart contract”) based on Blockchain technology is automatically closed in real time. In this, scope and availability are determined and provided with a payment; this is done in the cryptocurrency “SCU – Coins”, which is also generated on the blockchain.

For its part, the provider must provide technical proof that he has actually saved the data under the agreed conditions. If he is unable to do so, a contractual penalty previously filed on the Blockchain will automatically be due. For example, in the event of a server failure and the resulting temporary unavailability of the data, there are no lame excuses from an overburdened hotline, but an automatic repayment (or SCU coins) to the user.

Everyone wins with the Space.Cloud.Unit

For users, the Space.Cloud.Unit means greater flexibility through tailor-made conditions, more choice at a glance, simplification of search and contracting, data security through complete encryption and high decentralisation – and, of course, cost savings. They only pay for what they really need and get money back if there are any failures. But cloud providers also benefit, as SCU offers them an additional route to the usual channels to offer their services. Even IT service providers of all sizes can become cloud space providers in the SCU marketplace: simply make their own, unused storage available and earn money. Access to the Space.Cloud.Unit is also much easier in this regard than with the closed systems of large market vendors.

Finally, both sides ultimately benefit from the more than ten years of experience of dal33t / PowerFolder in the product development and implementation of cloud storage solutions, which are now incorporated into the Space.Cloud.Unit – which also saves development time and money. Furthermore, the connection of other open source software solutions, such as other cloud service providers, to Space.Cloud.Unit is planned. SCU – which was conceived as an open-source project – is not a hermetically sealed system, but open to all sides for growth, integration and cooperation. And that, too, ultimately benefits providers and users alike.

Financing via ICO is planned

The Space.Cloud.Unit will be funded through a multi-stage ICO, an initial coin offering, which will begin in the second half of 2018. In an ICO, unlike an IPO, where shares are sold for financing, self-generated tokens are offered that only have their value in the future product. If the project is successful, then the value of the tokens should also increase. So, if you invest early, you win. Blockchain ICOs generated $ 3.78 billion in revenue last year.

Supporters wanted

The young start-up team is currently looking for members of the Advisory Board, investors, interested parties, beta testers and other developers. Their commitment will be rewarded: they get access to the presale. More information on the SCU-website (https://space-cloud-unit.io/), in the newsletter or via telegram.

PowerFolder launches survey

What features do the customers miss? What can be improved? Because even with the best product there is still room for improvement, dal33t GmbH has started a survey on their File Sync & Share solution PowerFolder. Among the participants will be giving away 5x a terabyte of cloud storage for one year.

Düsseldorf, 09.03.2018 ‑ In order to be able to better consider the wishes and suggestions of its users in the further development of the File Sync & Share solution PowerFolder, Düsseldorf-based dal33t GmbH has launched several small surveys on its website. On topics such as “Mobile Apps”, “Collaboration”, “Usability”, “Security” and “Administration”, users can use short multiple-choice questionnaires to choose which new features they would like to see in PowerFolder in the future. The answer takes only a few minutes; a terabyte of cloud storage with a one-year term will be raffled off five times among the participants. Dal33t-CEO Christian Sprajc: „The survey is designed to help us synchronize PowerFolder development priorities with what our users want and to better tailor our product to the multiple practice needs of our customers.“
