Today we will give you an overview of the might of the centralized client administration using the web interface which is an integral component of the Enterprise Suite and optionally available via the Enterprise Addons for other Server Suites.

Administration of diverse deployments across multiple physical locations can often be a very challenging task for any administrator, hence the key functionality to reduce overhead is a central point of administration for clients.

This feature, present on the web interface of the server, allows the administrator to centrally manage deployed clients and actively push configurations and settings to remote clients:

• In collaboration scenarios existing folders on the server can be selected and added into a config, which then can be pushed to the clients, so they immediately start synchronizing those folders on their end.
• In client backup scenarios directories on the client, like for example Desktop, Favorites, My Documents and other local directories containing valuable data, can be synchronized automatically to the server, so with a regular usage of PowerFolder no data is lost in case of a hard-disk crash or theft of the laptop/desktop.
• In server synchronization scenarios clients often run in a headless mode as a system service, where the central configuration make it possible to remotely setup folders.

Of course we not only offer to push configurations for folders, but also for client settings, which makes it possible to unify the behavior of the client across all computer in the network.

Currently we are heavily working on our new next-generation mobile apps. As always PowerFolder supports a cross-platform approach on both desktop and mobile environments; both Android and iOS are being supported. This allows seamless integration of mobile working environments into any existing PowerFolder in-house business cloud.

The new PowerFolder file synchronization client “Luna” is ready to be installed on your computer. Like never before we have been supported by our customers and worked long and hard to deliver your the best and most easy PowerFolder experience you ever had. The most important changes are:

New Features

• Brand new simplified user interface. PowerFolder now starts in “Compact mode”, which shows the most important information only. An “Expert mode” still offers detailed information.

• Drastically reduced memory usage (60% reduction in average) and reduced CPU usage. No additional Java runtime required anymore.

• Copy file link to clipboard feature added. Right click any file in Windows-Explorer to grab a link to that file, which can be send e.g. via instant messenger or social networks.

• Pause mode with human adaptive behavior: PowerFolder keeps silent as long as you work or for a certain amount of time, e.g. 5 minutes, 1 hour, forever.

• Many more features. Check them out!

Improvements

• Drag and drop support for new directory to be shared. Simply drop a directory onto the new PowerFolder user interface to backup, sync or share it.

• Local file changes get reverted if user lacks sufficient permissions or is backup target. Reverted files are moved into the file archive on the local computer.

• Most important functions are now available directly from system tray menu.

Bugfixes

• Now correctly detects computers in subnetwork with actual (non private) IP address.

• Fixes several update bugs, e.g. corrected upgrade in background.

This time our Head of Development and CEO Christian Sprajc went out to present PowerFolder Server and Project Moonshot at the TERENA Networking Conference 2012, from 21-25 May 2012 in Reykjavík, Iceland.

Project Moonshot is an initiative led by JANET, to develop and bring federated identity to  cloud infrastructures, high-performance computing and grid infrastructures as well as mail, file, remote access and instant messaging services. PowerFolder Server is a product of the PowerFolder portfolio, which provides intelligent, secure and reliable file storage and collaboration solutions. Both solutions share the one goal to unite to provide an easy and simple way to share educational or research material within small groups or larger audiences as well as between single individuals, accessed by using federated identity services.

Project Moonshot is developed in partnership with the GÉANT project, the pan-European data network dedicated to the research and education community. Therefore we were presenting PowerFolder Server and Project Moonshot at the GÉANT booth at the TNC2012.

We also presented the PowerFolder Server usecase of distribution of teaching materials, collaboration and backup at the Lightning Talks sessions, by the example of mySchool! In Luxemburg, which will integrate PowerFolder to provide the above services to students and teachers. Furthermore highlights of the upcoming plans the Moonshot project were pointed out.
