Transferring data

Once PowerFolder finds other computers which are also members of the same Folder it will establish a securely encrypted direct connection with the other clients. In LAN they are not encrypted by default, but this can be enabled under preferences/pro settings/encryption. Direct connections over the Internet will be only possible if you configured your router and firewall correctly (port 1337 needs to be open, this port can be changed to another one).

This connections will be:

  • direct
  • encrypted
  • without any traffic relay
  • with the full transfer speed of your connection(LAN&Internet).
  • freely configured by the transfer modes

The data send over this connections will be:

  • ZIP compressed
  • downloaded from all avidable sources on this folder
  • updated by only transferring the changed parts of a file
  • only existing on your systems.

If a direct connection is not possible PowerFolder will relay the connection over our relay servers. This does not mean that we do store your data somewhere or have access to it, but the encrypted connection will be not direct. This has no disadvantages on the security side but might effect your transfer speed.
