Preface

This guide explains how to install and run the PowerFolder clients to connect to PowerFolder Server.

Installation and setup

Requirements

User account creation and license

  1. Create a new user account via the server admin console.
  2. Add a client license for the user.

Installing the client (unbranded/generic)

  1. Download and install the PowerFolder Pro generic client.
  2. On startup or under Preferences/Network PowerFolder asks for an server web address to connect to (screenshot). Enter the web address of the server. This connects the client to the server. Make sure to add ":8080" port suffix when using web interface port 8080 (standard). Example: http://myserver.com:8080
  3. Activate/Register PowerFolder online with the email/username and password (Activation quickstart guide). Alternatively you can load a license key file.
  4. Click through the next basic setup steps.
  5. Ready. You may now create new PowerFolders as usual and mark "Backup online" during setup. The server will backup those files automatically.

Installing the client (branded)

The branded distribution of the PowerFolder client already contains the settings for the custom server. Therefore the installation is simpler:

  1. Download, install and start your branded version of PowerFolder.
  2. Activate online with the username and password of the user.
  3. Click through the next basic setup steps.
  4. Ready. You may now create new PowerFolders as usual and mark "Backup online" during setup. The server will backup those files automatically.

Client Update instructions (generic and branded)

PowerFolder client is able to check and auto-update itself. Clients for PowerFolder Server will check and download updates from their own server only. This makes it possible for a server provider to decided when to deploy a update.

Update steps

  1. Place your latest installer EXE file (e.g. PowerFolder_v5.0.6_Installer.exe) in the subdirectory "client_deployment" of the Server maintenance folder and rename it to "PowerFolder_Latest_Installer.exe" (even if branded!).
  2. Place your latest JAR file in the subdirectory "client_deployment" of the Server maintenance folder and rename it to "PowerFolder.jar".
  3. Place your latest MAC file in the subdirectory "client_deployment" of the Server maintenance folder and rename it to "PowerFolder_Latest_Mac.tar.gz".
  4. Create and edit the file "PowerFolderPro_LatestVersion.txt" in the subdirectory "client_deployment" of the Server maintenance folder and enter the version of the new release. e.g. "3.1.9".
  5. After one hour or on next client start it detects the new version and asks the user to update.
