Preface

This document describes the changes of the PowerFolder Server software.

New Features

Improvements

  • Automated and transparent licensing of clients. Licenses get used and renew only when user actually runs the client app. Re-licensing happens on a monthly instead of yearly basis now (micro license credits).
  • Bullet-proof deployment of client apps: Now the server connection is automatically established when downloading the client from the own server (encoded in download filename).
  • Free/Trial clients can sync up to 2 GB of data now.
  • Security: Password storage is now salted and hashed in database.
  • Security: Recover password email not longer sends out passwords.
  • Folder sync reporting: Email now includes the number of new files of the last day.
  • File Archive settings can now be globally configured by the admin.
  • LDAP/Active Directory connection: Option to allow users, which are not in LDAP, to use PowerFolder (web/client).
  • Simplified installation and improved troubleshooting possibilities.
  • Added more statistic graphs to the dashboard: New users and Last logins at the server.
  • When deleting a (top-level) folders its data now gets preserved in a backup directory (subdirectory of PowerFolders/BACKUP_REMOVE).
  • Login prompt text now shows "Username:" instead of "Email:" if no-email usernames are used to identify a user.
  • Welcome emails to new users can be turned off under Preferences/EMail.
  • Security: Network ID automatically gets generated on initial server setup.

Bugfixes

  • Fixed a bug which made subdirectories inaccessible via mobile app.
  • wrapper.conf is now preserved during a server program update.
  • Fixed a security bug, which allowed javascript/HTML injection.
  • Several fixes in LDAP/Active directory connection.
  • PowerFolder Server on Windows handles illegal characters in filenames of Linux and Mac clients, e.g "My:file.txt".
  • Fixed a bug, which caused old search results to re-appear.
  • Single quotations ' in folder names not longer cause problems while browsing files.

Upgrade information

(Windows)

  1. Download PowerFolder Server 4.0 from the server download page.
  2. Run the installer. It automatically stops and starts PowerFolder Server.
  3. Migration of own web skin: Due to the massive changes in the web portal web skins have to be re-created.
  4. Clear your browser cache! before opening the web portal again.

All configuration and database will be preserved during update.

New Features

  • SSL / HTTPS support of the web portal is now built-into PowerFolder Server. Easily request and import a new or existing certificate. SSL options are available under Web Admin / Preferences / SSL.
  • Windows installer was added. Server installation on Windows is now a breeze.
  • Public web folders added. It's now possible to grant public/anonymous access via web on folders (See Preferences/Webinterface/Allow public access and Folder/Settings).

Improvements

  • Mobile web app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices now fully adapts the coloring of your skin/web interface. This can be setup under Web / Preferences / Webinterface.
  • Network ID can now be configured in the server's preferences. This reduce the number of foreign P2P connections and completely separates your server and clients from the powerfolder.com network.
  • Folder alerts: It's now possible to automatically inform the owner of a folder by email if his folder(s) aren't synced for a certain number of days/hours/minutes. Retrieves Email addresses from LDAP/Active directory if setup and necessary.
  • Web interface port is now by default always 8080.
  • Flexible directory structure allows to seamlessly integrated with existing directory/folder structures.
  • Performance improvements of transfers, especially when transferring many small files quickly.

Bugfixes

  • Fixed several problems during setup of Active Directory connection under Preferences/LDAP.
  • Fixed many problems with WebDAV interface.
  • Several fixes of the web portal with Internet Explorer. Dashboard should now correctly initialize.
  • Fixed wrong clicking behavior on textarea input fields.
  • "Meta" folders not longer appear in the folder list.
  • Several smaller bugfixes.

Upgrade information

(Windows)

  1. Download PowerFolder Server 3.5.0 from the server download page.
  2. Stop PowerFolder server service.
  3. Windows only: Uninstall PowerFolder Server Service (Uninstall-Service.bat)
  4. Run the installer. It automatically starts PowerFolder Server after upgrade.
  5. Migration of own web skin: Download and extract this ZIP into the skin directory.

Note: If you have PowerFolder.config located in your installation path please move it to the new location (App data directory of the service, e.g. C:\ProgramData\PowerFolder or C:\Documents and Settings\All users\Local settings\PowerFolder)

Regular included new features

Improvements

  • Drastically simplified account/client license management. License re-use and activation is now much easier and 100% web based. No license key files need to be moved around anymore.
  • Data directory structure on server now includes the username of the creator. e.g. PowerFolder\user\Project XYZ
  • Default admin account is now always: 'admin' with password 'password'.
  • LDAP/Active Directory integration: It's now possible to specify a 'bind' username and password for search queries if anon login is not possible. This fixes problems with Windows Server installations.
  • Folder list now shows the owner of each folder.
  • Folder sync report also shows the owner of each folder.
  • E-Commerce addon comes with default/examples products (Gold, Silver and more)
  • E-Commerce addon's shop page is now also available without login (price list).
  • Tooltips for icons in the top menubar and the apps bar on the bottom instantly show up when hovering over them.
  • Web requests are now served as gzip compressed stream if browser supports this.
  • Folder name is now part of the web page title for better browser history search.
  • Log file of the same day, but previous start, will not longer be overwritten but appended to.

Bugfixes

  • Fixed bug, that prevented folders from being deleted by the admin.
  • Now all folder correctly show up when logging in as admin.
  • Fixed duplicate/old folders appearing in search field results under Accounts/Folders.
  • Fixed WebDAV problem.
  • Fixed wrong port setting under linux. Now by default uses port 8080.
  • "Create folder" button is not presented to users without permission to create new folders.

Upgrade information

  1. Download PowerFolder Server 3.0.0 from the server download page.
  2. Stop PowerFolder server.
  3. Rename file "PowerFolder-server.jar" to "PowerFolder-server.jar.backup"
  4. Prepare Web skin migration: Reset your skin. Remove the line beginning with "plugin.webinterface.skin=" from your server config file.
  5. Email templates migration: Delete the file "report_folder.vm" in the email templates directory of server maintenance folder.
  6. Extract all files from the zip or tar-gz distribution file into the installation directory.
  7. Start PowerFolder server.
  8. Complete Web skin migration: 1) Create a new skin from an existing one under Preferences/Web/Skin. 2) Copy all files from your old skin directory "images" to the "images" directory of the new skin.
  9. Important: Make sure to clear you browsers cache.
