Preface

PowerFolder is able to maintain separated peer-to-peer networks. This is done by adding a network ID setting to the server config file.

The network ID denotes a logical, separated peer-to-peer network within PowerFolder. Only connections to computers with the same network ID get established. This completely separates the server and all clients from the public PowerFolder infrastructure and keeps also the list of users/computers in the program restricted to those with the same network ID.

ATTENTION: Computers with different network IDs are NOT able to communicate at all.

Choosing a network ID

It is recommended to choose a network ID that matches the domain of your service, e.g. mydomain.com. Or you hit the "generate" button under Preferences/General to generate a unique random one.

Config file

Examples for setting the network ID in the server configuration file:

# Customized network ID
networkid=mydomain.com

# Default network ID
networkid=X
networkid=

It is optional to configure a network ID. If not set PowerFolder clients and server will communicate, but it's possible that foreign users/computers from the PowerFolder network appear when searching for friends.

Client setup

Clients automatically use the network ID of the server during initial setup. If you change the network later please re-enter the server URL at the client(s) under Preferences/Network/Server

The network ID of the server is automatically written to the client configuration file which is retrieved when entering the server URL. It is not required and possible to set the network ID anywhere in the client's Preferences.
