View Full Version : Closed Synchronisation just stopped working

Before I start I should explain that I am a techno-virgin and do not understand the workings behind the user face. Rank beginner.

We have been using powerfolder to synchronise files between laptop and PC. The function simply stopped working giving the message that all folders were synchronised - they definitely were not.

Action taken: upgraded to latest version and made sure that Java was the latest version. Powerfolder did synch immediately that was done (a week ago) and hasn't since.

What can I do? Any simple step by step help would be much appreciated.

What means Rank beginner?
At first it could be useful to know which verson of Powerfolder you are running and how much files in how many folders you are running. Which OS?

1.Are you connected with the other users?(can yiou chat with them via PowerFolder?)
2. Can you sync with another computer?
3.Are your sync profiles set correct (mirror)?
4.Did you set up your connection to your true speed(preferrences/network)


Also it could be useful to send us your logfiles so we can check directly what is wrong.
you need to enable the logfiles first:
Under Settings/advanced/enable debug logging.
Later you will be able to find the log files in your
Powerfolder installation path.
it would be extremely helpful if you could enable debug
logging/restart powerfolder/reproduce the problem/quit
powerfolder and send us the powerfolder.log.


The log file contains no files only a log of the problems and internal processes.

Thanks Bernhard, will work on finding the information for you and send it on.
Rank beginner only means absolute beginner ie. no experience. I have just upgraded to version 3.0.2 but the problem was evident before upgrading and remained after upgrading on both the laptop and the PC.
Running vista (I'm guessing that OS means operating system) on both.
I'm not sure I understand question number 4, can you clarify here please?

Did you set up your connection to your true speed(preferrences/network)
means that you set your connections speed to the connection you have like DSL 256 if you have this connection speed.
Unlimited is only for people who have extreme fast connections....
If you want to test your computers with us please create a testfolder with nonsense data (3-4 Files)and invite user nakata to it (thats me). I will be online for the next 4 hours.

This may sound very dumb but I have to ask...... you advise me to go to settings/advanced/enable debug logging, but I cannot find settings let alone advanced. I've searched and searched and feel silly asking but where is it? I've even checked the screen shots on your web site and still cannot locate, sorry.

I am also puzzled because on the laptop I can at least access a PowerFolder screen but not so on the PC - is that right? It is one of the reasons I have been slow in getting back to you. The laptop is out and about and I couldn't get any information from the PC. The laptop will be not be with me again next week and I am getting very concerned that it will be almost 3 weeks since the last synch. Starting to get confused as to where the information is held!

I am in Australia, I am assuming you are somewhere else and that time differences may make it difficult to get the problem solved. What do you think the turn around time would be if I were to get a log to you tomorrow, 22 March in the afternoon Australia East Coast time?

Sorry to ask so many basic questions but this is all new to me.

Ah yes right first you need to enable advanced settings under general settings.

For the first time since our synchronisation stopped happening I have the laptop and PC together so can give you further information that I hope is helpful to you in resolving the problem of the two computers not synchronising.
OK here it is:
laptop shows: 12440 files 3117 folders
PC shows: 13210 files 3086 folders
Powerfolder on laptop shows 12430 files for laptop and PC
Cannot find number of files through Powerfolder on PC

Member synch status for laptop shows 100% (but not actually so)
Member synch status for PC shows ?%

Bottom left hand corner of Powerfolder screen shows "connecting (LAN only)" - does not show connected.

Synch profile is "mirror"

LAN connection speed is "unlimited". Have tried reducing the speed and ordering a synch but not succcessful.



On the PC cannot access PowerFolder. It gives me the PowerFolder logo, the line proceeds to approximately three quarters of the way across and stops.

The other computer is showing as disconnected and I cannot chat even when i select Lan and on line - bottom left hand corner of screen shows "on line limited connectivity". I cannot figure out how to connect. I've tried to use 'connect' to no avail.

I've downloaded and reinstalled another copy of Powerfolder on the PC and sent an invitation from the laptop however the invitation will not open on the PC - same as above. I get the PowerFolder logo and the line travels 3/4 of the way across and stops. Also cannot open Powerfolder as before.

I thought maybe the firewall was blocking but tested with firewall off and still couldn't open.

I have downloaded the latest version of Java.

I couldn't work out how to set up advanced settings.

Over to you now! I've exhausted all I can do.

Unfortunately I won't have the two computers together again now until Monday 26 May.


I will watch for the live chat to 'wake up' but I won't have the computers with me.
